Toledo Handyman and Home Repair

Handyman vs Contractor in Toledo: When You Need Which

When your bathroom faucet drips, you call a handyman. When you're moving the bathroom to a different room, you need a contractor. Here's the line, with examples and costs.

Every Toledo homeowner runs into the same question eventually: is this a handyman job or a contractor job? The answer determines whether you spend $89 or $8,900. It also determines whether you wait two days or two months.

Here’s the line we use after running hundreds of jobs across the Toledo area.

The simplest rule

If the repair touches structural framing, gas lines, main electrical panels, or moves drains and water lines through finished walls, it’s a licensed contractor job. Everything else is handyman territory.

That covers maybe 90% of the calls we get.

Handyman jobs (us)

These are the small-to-medium repairs that big contractors won’t quote because the job is “too small to bother” — but they break your day if they don’t get fixed.

  • Leaking faucet, running toilet, clogged drain
  • Drywall patch (small to medium)
  • Door alignment, hinge replacement, latch fixes
  • Smart lock install on existing deadbolt
  • Light fixture swap (using existing wiring)
  • Outlet faceplate replacement
  • Painting (room or whole interior)
  • Cabinet hardware, trim, baseboard
  • Deck board replacement, fence repair
  • LVP flooring install
  • Rental turnover punch lists

Standard $89 visit covers most single-fixture work. Materials at receipt cost. See what’s included in our $89 visit.

Contractor jobs (not us)

You need a licensed plumber for:

  • Main water line replacement
  • Sewer line repair
  • Gas line install or move
  • Whole-home repipe
  • Water heater install if it requires moving the gas line

You need a licensed electrician for:

  • New circuits or panel upgrade
  • Anything inside the breaker box
  • Adding outlets through finished walls (we can do exposed conduit work)
  • EV charger install

You need a general contractor for:

  • Additions (new rooms, second story)
  • Load-bearing wall removal
  • Foundation work
  • Roof replacement (full tear-off, not patching)
  • New construction

The gray zone

Some jobs straddle the line. Here’s how we handle them:

Bathroom renovation — handyman scope as long as we’re not moving the fixtures more than a few feet. New tile, new vanity, new toilet, new lighting in the existing locations? That’s us. Knocking down a wall to expand the bathroom into the next room? Contractor.

Kitchen renovation — same. Cosmetic refresh, cabinet swap, countertop install, backsplash, lighting upgrade — handyman. Moving the kitchen to a different part of the house, removing a load-bearing wall, or putting in gas where there was none — contractor.

Deck build — handyman if attached deck under ~200 sqft and you have a permit. Bigger or freestanding multi-level decks usually want a contractor.

Electrical — handyman for replacing existing outlets, switches, and light fixtures. Anything new (a circuit, a new outlet location, anything inside the breaker box) — licensed electrician.

How to decide which to call

Three questions:

  1. Does the job require breaking into walls, floors, or framing? Yes → contractor.
  2. Does it touch gas or the main electrical panel? Yes → licensed pro.
  3. Will the job take more than 3-4 days of continuous work? Probably contractor.

If the answer is no to all three, we can handle it. Send a photo through our portal — we tell you within hours whether it’s our scope, and if not, we point you to a Toledo pro who handles it. We don’t charge for the diagnostic.

Cost comparison

For perspective on why the distinction matters:

JobHandyman costContractor cost
Leaking faucet$89 + $10-45 part$200-$400 service call
Drywall patch (small)$89$250-$500 minimum
Bathroom faucet swap$89 + $80-300 fixture$300-$600
Whole-room paint$300-$650$800-$1,500
Toilet replacement$150-$250 + $150-400 toilet$400-$800 + toilet

Contractors aren’t ripping you off — they have overhead, licensing, insurance, and minimum job sizes that justify their pricing for the scope they target. They just aren’t built for $89 jobs.
